St. Kilda Beach, Australia: Visna and Varun

St. Kilda Beach Engagement Photos

On our first night of travels in Melbourne, we hit up St. Kilda Beach. Along with a beautiful pier, it had a stunning sunset that overlooked the ocean waters. I was discussing with my travel friend, Chris what a beautiful spot it would’ve been to shoot a wedding or engagement here. However, finding a couple or model would’ve been hard as we were travelling in a foreign country.

A night later, myself and Chris was checking things off our list of things to photograph in Melbourne. As fate would have it, going back to Hosier Lane, a famous laneway of graffiti art was on our list. Earlier in the afternoon, we were just there, however, I thought it would be neat to go back during the evening to see the difference.

As we were photographing the graffiti, we encountered some random things. One would be a Youtube star dressed as Batman and Bane, filming for their Youtube/ Instagram channel. On the other side of the alleyway, we saw a couple taking a few photos in front of a graffiti wall that we had seen earlier in the day, with the words  ” Visna Marry Me? She said yes”. Out of curiosity, we asked if they knew the couple. To our surprise, they said that they were the couple that just got engaged. After a few congratulatory words, I mentioned how I was a wedding photographer back home in Vancouver. With a few exchanged words, we had an engagement shoot set up for St. Kilda Beach the next day! What were the chances?

Needless to say, I was pretty nervous. In a foreign country, with limited gear, and in an unfamiliar scene, I was ready for the challenge. I had brought my Sony A7 and Zeiss 55mm lens with me, which I normally use for weddings. In addition, I borrowed my friends Sony A6300 with my 24-70mm lens attached to it. Using these two bodies, and lenses, I was ready to shoot.

Throughout our shoot, I got to learn more about these two. From their engagement story, of how Visna was running late for Varun’s proposal plans to how these two met through Varun’s sister, back in their high school days. Although these two thought they were awkward, I couldn’t disagree more.  From the first photo to the last, these two were all smiles and laughter. Thank you so much for letting me capture your engagement session, at a beautiful location. It was definitely an unexpected highlight of my trip. Sending a huge congrats to these two all the way from Vancouver.
